Plans to spend £250,000 on upgrading the street scene in Stoke town centre have gone out for consultation.

The plans involve utilising the square on South Wolfe Street, which is home to the library and the indoor market, to create a better venue for events and increase footfall into the market.

The money is coming from £6 million in Levelling-up funding with both Burslem and Tunstall also receiving government cash to increase footfall and boost business activity. The plans involve new paving to improve pedestrian accessibility and reduce vehicle dominance as well as barriers on either side of South Wolfe Street to close the road when events are held.

New tree planting is also proposed on the square which holds a number of events and activities held in the town including Feastival, Ghostronomy and the Stoke Town Square Saturday Series. However there have been calls to spend the money on the indoor market.

Kate Sale from J&K Hardware located in the indoor market said: "It's alright it being done out there but this market is in dire need of money being spent on it. There's no disabled facilities, there's no baby change facilities. People aren't going to come if you haven't got the basic facilities."

Shopper Karen Pearson added: "I saw the information board and I think if they actually do it it'll look better but they should be encouraging going into the market. It seems like every time you go there are less and less stalls."

Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for Transport, Infrastructure and Regeneration at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: "We really want as many people as possible to feedback on these exciting plans which will help to breathe new life into Burslem, Burslem and Tunstall town centres.

"The regeneration proposals we have set out will improve the economic viability of the towns, help better link key parts of the towns and are being developed to complement the other exciting project work taking place.

"So, it is vital to hear residents' priorities for spending the money and to use these ideas to shape the final plan ready for work to start later this year."

Stoke-on-Trent Council has held a public consultation event for residents to hear more about the plans and to ask questions.

Details of the plans and how to submit feedback can be found here.
