A major highways improvements scheme in Newcastle-under-Lyme has started this week.

The £285,000 scheme is being carried out by Staffordshire County Council and is expected to take around six weeks to complete.

The work on the A525 Higherland will include resurfacing of the road along with repairs and replacement of damaged kerbs and drainage.

Temporary traffic lights and lane closures will be in place for the majority of the scheme and between 5 and 7 August, the road will be closed for resurfacing.

Mark Deaville, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways at Staffordshire County Council said: "Good roads are essential for people and for our local economy, which is why we are investing more than £50 million in highways over the next three years.

"This is a busy part of the town and a well-used section of road in need of an upgrade, so it's great to see crews getting started on the work.

"As ever, our crews will be doing their best to keep disruption to a minimum, including doing some of the works during the school holiday when less traffic is expected. They'll also be carrying out the resurfacing part overnight when the road is quieter. It's likely that there will be some delays while the work is carried out and I'd like to thank people in advance for their patience."
