Plans to expand a North Staffordshire mosque have been submitted.

The proposals for Newcastle-under-Lyme Islamic Centre's Masjid At-Taqwa, in Westlands, include a two-storey rear extension, a new porch and the addition of 13.5 metre tall minaret.

There would also be internal remodelling and the insertion of a mezzanine floor, with the internal area of the building being increased by 606 square metres.

According to the planning application, the works will 'enhance and modernise' the facilities, providing dedicated male and female prayer halls, modern ablution facilities, community spaces and classrooms.

The building, in Pilkington Avenue, was previously St Peter's Methodist Church before being turned into a mosque, which attracts up to 200 worshippers for Friday prayers.

It includes a large rear car park, which would not be affected by the proposals.

The application states: "The proposed extension, minaret, and internal remodelling at Masjid At-Taqwa represent a high-quality, sensitive architectural enhancement of an established community facility.

"The scheme carefully balances respect for the historic streetscape along Pilkington Avenue with the practical needs of the local Muslim community."

The proposed brick minaret would be constructed at the back of the building, next to the rear extension.

According to the plans, it will act as a 'subtle architectural spire', proportionate to church towers and spires in the surrounding area. The mosque stands across the road from St Andrew's Anglican Church.

Planners at Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council are expected to make a decision on the proposals by 19 October.
