A tree has grown out of control down a small residential street in Newcastle-under-Lyme and residents say it is making it virtually impossible to pass.

The tree, which has engulfed the pavement, is on Poplar Avenue just off the A34. Residents have previously reported the tree to Staffordshire County Council and have been told that the site has been assessed and no further action is required.

Residents say the tree was only cut back a couple of months ago by Staffordshire County Council, however, since then it has just been left to regrow and is now worse than ever.

Pat McLaughlin who only moved in to his property two years ago said: "They started doing them and they cut it down last year. The last couple of years somebody else has trimmed it down but I can't understand why the council cut it right down and left it.

"Look at it now, it was a stump when they left it but it's going to grow again. That's quite obvious - It's all over the pavement."

Councillors say that work is planned to remove the stump and resurface the pavement (LDRS).

It is understood that some residents have been told that work on a number of trees down Poplar Avenue is set to begin on 18 August, however this has not been confirmed.

Poplar Avenue resident, Katie Swann commented: "To be honest I think most of the trees up and down here are overgrown. It is a bit of a nightmare, especially people walking up and down here with prams or a mobility scooter, I imagine it would be a pain in the backside.

"It would be nice if the council did something about it but I can't see it happening."

David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council said: "Our highways crews are aware of the issue and for safety reasons the tree was removed a number of years ago.

"Crews do plan to return to the site to remove the stump and this work will be carried out over the next few weeks. Following this the footpath will be resurfaced."
