One North Staffordshire street has seen bins along the street overflowing with rubbish and have spent 40 minutes trying to report the issue to the council.

Bins along Hatrell Street in Newcastle-under-Lyme are currently overflowing with rubbish dumped in them. Residents along the street have assumed that the landlords from properties which have had students in are to blame.

The rubbish includes a duvet, pizza boxes, bags of rubbish which are overflowing on the pavement and electricals.

Resident Jason Poole said: "It is annoying when you try and keep your area as clean as you can. One of the issues we have is there are alot of students which live nearby and most of them have started going home, this means the landlords start to clear the properties.

Laura Johnson said: "I have just reported it this morning. It absolutely stinks, I know people have had a rat problem, it is just frustrating. There is always a congestion of bins which are not collected and rubbish just dumped in them.

Many residents have tried reporting the issue to the council, but are struggling to get a response (LDRS).

"We just want something done about it, whether that means fining people or removing their bins. When it has happened before, it has been reported to the council and it gets cleaned up and as soon as they've done it more rubbish is dumped."

Chrissy King has attempted to report this issue this morning however spent 40 minutes on the phone to the council and could not get through. She has decided to take action into get own hands and start trying to put the rubbish in bins.

Ms King said "I think it is one of those issues we've got with this road is there are a lot of HMOs so at the moment they are kicking a lot of students out, so they just empty the house. So it's a difficult one, who is ultimately responsible, the students or the landlord."

Newcastle Borough Council is blaming the issue on bins not being collected.

Councillor David Hutchison, cabinet member for sustainable environment, said: "We're sorry that this resident's bin was not emptied on this occasion and would ask that she gets in touch as soon as possible so that we can look into the matter and avoid it happening again. We will also speak to the refuse team."
