A 34-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman have been sentenced after assaulting a member of the public and two police officers in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Eamonn O'Rourke, 34, and Karly Parfitt, 19, both from Kidsgrove, each admitted three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm at a court hearing in June.

O'Rourke also admitted possession of a controlled drug of class A (cocaine) and possession of a controlled drug of class B (cannabis).

At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday 7 Septembe), O'Rourke was sentenced to two-years-and-three months in jail.

Parfitt was given a one-year-and-one month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Police Constable Meakin said: "Assaults on members of our communities and emergency service workers will not be tolerated.

"I'm pleased that both offenders have been brought to justice for their actions."

It comes after O'Rourke and Parfitt were fighting on Wright Avenue, Newcastle-under-Lyme, on 6 June last year.

When a member of the public tried to intervene, Staffordshire Police said they responded by "seriously assaulting him".

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police added: "They later punched, kicked and bit two police officers called to the scene."
