A development plan for Spode, the internationally renowned former site of ceramics production, is set to be approved at a Stoke-on-Trent City Council cabinet meeting.

A development plan has been produced following a review of the site in consultation with local stakeholders and site users.

The plan outlines a comprehensive regeneration of the site which will celebrate its rich heritage, enhance the local arts scene and re-invent former pottery buildings for 'crea-tech' uses - a term being used for creative and digital industries - with scope to create a complementary cluster of businesses and services. 

Following planning approval, work will begin to create a thriving creative neighbourhood that will help transform the town centre and support existing businesses whist protecting and showcasing the unique heritage of the site. Revitalisation of this area will also be key to attracting further investment to Stoke town.

The development plan sets out the most viable buildings for redevelopment as well as the expansion of existing businesses including creative, arts and leisure operations. It advises on new access points, links to the town centre and car parking as well as creating a safe and accessible environment with green spaces for the community to enjoy. It also considers opportunities associated with the future development of the adjacent site to the east. 

Council leader, Jane Ashworth said: "Our city is already home to an established and expanding cutting-edge tech sector, and it is not a coincidence they are congregating in and around the Spode site, Staffordshire University and the train station. The opportunities for this sector can and will continue to flourish in the city." 

The Stoke-on-Trent City Council cabinet meeting will take place on 13 August (Nub News).

Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker cabinet member for Transport, Infrastructure and Regeneration said: "The Spode Factory site offers huge potential for the city. It's already home to a burgeoning creative community and with its historic character, has the potential to become a unique and stand out place.  

"We've had to plan carefully to ensure we get the right development. Involving local businesses and the community is essential for future success; ensuring local needs are met and existing businesses thrive. It has taken some time to get to this position but we are ensuring the right approach to create a lasting legacy for the city and its residents."
