Attempted murder suspect arrested after stabbing in Stoke town centre

A 29-year-old man suspected of attempted murder is currently in police custody after a man was stabbed in Stoke town centre this morning (8 May).

The victim had his van stolen on Church Street and was stabbed, leaving him with "potentially life-changing" injuries. He was transferred to the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Staffordshire Police was called to Stoke town centre at 4:35am and the 29-year-old was later arrested in Wolverhampton after fleeing in the stolen van. He was also arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "We were called at 4.35am this morning (Thursday 8 May) to reports that a man had been stabbed and had his van stolen on Church Street.

"The victim was taken to hospital. His condition is described as not life threatening but potentially life changing.

"A 29-year-old man, from Stoke-on-Trent, was arrested in Wolverhampton in the van on suspicion of attempted murder and driving whilst unfit through drink. He is in custody in Staffordshire and will be interviewed by detectives.

"Roads around Church Street in Stoke are currently busy and have been cordoned off. Please consider alternative routes."
