Two people were taken to hospital after a fire at a restaurant in Stoke-on-Trent this morning.

Paramedics treated a man and a woman after being called out to the Furama Palace restaurant on Newcastle Road, in Trent Vale this morning (14 July).

Emergency services were alerted to a large fire in the roof of the building just before 4am and it has now been extinguished.

Newcastle Road currently remains closed and a police cordon is in place while firefighters continue to dampen down hot spots.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is also set to begin.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue added: "Firefighters have extinguished a large fire at a restaurant in Stoke-on-Trent.

"We were called to Newcastle Road, Trent Vale, at 3.45am today (Monday 14 July) following reports of smoke coming from a detached building.

"Five appliances including our aerial ladder platform (ALP) attended the scene and found a large fire in the roof of the building.

"Two main jets and two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire and two people were taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

"Crews remain at the scene to dampen down hot spots.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place in due course."

The road has since reopened.
