Tunstall light switch on to take place this weekend after five-year hiatus
Families are in for a festive treat this weekend as a traditional Christmas lights switch-on returns to one of the six Stoke-on-Trent towns – after a five-year hiatus. The fun will start in Tunstall at 2pm on Saturday (December 2) with the switch being flicked at around 4.30pm.
The event, organised by Tunstall Town Centre Community Association, promises to be packed with activities, including a fun fair, stalls and tombola. Santa will also be paying a visit to the town and is looking to land his sleigh from 3pm.
The association, which only formed earlier this year, has purchased a four-metre Christmas tree to take centre stage in Tower Square. The event will also coincide with the Tunstall Market Christmas light switch at 3pm.
In 2021 former councillor Lee Wanger said he could not justify spending another £2,500 from his ward budget for the tree and lights when the year previous they were stolen within two days. Last year a tree and lights were put on the square but this is the first time since 2018 that a full switch on event has taken place.
It is hoped that the event will be a huge success and it can grow in the future. Recently the community association held a meeting to discuss the logistics of holding the big event which includes mandated safety forms, meetings with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the practicalities of hooking up the electricity to the tree.
