Three Stoke-on-Trent MPs sign petition against Commons Speaker
Stoke-on-Trent's three Conservative MPs are among more than 50 calling on the Commons Speaker to quit – following yesterday's Gaza vote furore.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle broke with convention to allow MPs a vote on Labour's ceasefire motion on Wednesday night, resulting in some Tory and SNP MPs walking out in protest.
An early day motion expressing 'no confidence in the Speaker' has so far been signed by 58 Conservative and SNP MPs. They include Stoke-on-Trent North MP Jonathan Gullis, Stoke-on-Trent Central's Jo Gideon and Jack Brereton, MP for Stoke-on-Trent South. Crewe and Nantwich's Tory MP Kieran Mullan is one of the EDM's sponsors.
EDMs are a way for MPs to express their view on a particular subject, like a petition, but they do not have any direct impact in practical terms. But if an EDM shows that a viewpoint has widespread support, it could lead to a Commons debate on the subject.
MPs eventually approved Labour's call for an 'immediate humanitarian ceasefire' following hours of debate on Wednesday, but this will have no effect on the UK government's policy.
