Royal Stoke given permission to keep ‘temporary’ waiting area for a further three years
Royal Stoke University Hospital has been granted permission from Stoke-on-Trent City Council to keep a temporary waiting area for a further three years.
The single-storey portable building is situated near the Accident and Emergency Department and Children's Wards and is linked to the existing building with access to A&E.
The waiting area was initially installed in September 2020 as a means of providing socially distanced waiting facilities during the Covid-19 pandemic.
University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust has now been allowed to use the 94 square meter building as a waiting area for a further three years.
A design and access statement submitted as part of the application states: "The Portakabin building has been chosen as a result of the flexible solution it provides.
"It can be installed quickly enabling Royal Stoke University Hospital to begin using the specifically fitted out building much more quickly than a traditional build and it can easily be removed from site with little impact on the grounds."
The officers report, published on 12 September, grants permission for the waiting area to be used for a further three years but "shall be removed from the site by 30 September 2026 and the land reinstated to its former condition by 31 October 2026".
