Residents have said that parking outside St John's CE Primary School in Keele has become a safeguarding issue as cars park dangerously and in some cases have even blocked driveways while picking their children up from the school.

Despite a carpark being provided for parents it is not big enough for every parent and Quarry Bank Road resident Clare Bentley speculated that students at Keele University were using it.

This means that once the car park is full residents are forced to wait for a stop which backs up traffic down Quarry Bank Road or find alternative means of parking which involves parking on double yellow lines or spaces along nearby streets.

Cones have been placed to prevent parking in dangerous areas outside the school (LDR).

Mrs Bentley said: "We get people parking all on the corner (Quarry Bank Road and Newsam Close) and they block the dropped kerb, sometimes they block the pavement completely – it's chaos here.

"It has got to the point of a safeguarding issue, children are being exposed to risk everyday and nothing is done about it. I feel we are just waiting for an accident to happen until anyone does anything about it."

It is understood that the corner of Quarry Bank Road and Newsam Close is waiting for double yellow lines to be installed, however, due to the delay cars have been parking on the corner, often dangerously, in the past week police cones have been seen to prevent parking in certain areas.

In the past Clare has challenged drivers who have parked dangerously or on double yellow lines and has been met with hostile responses.

Susan Brown said that cars regularly parked outside her house before double yellow lines were installed and called for action.

She said: "The police have started to put cones out to stop people parking on the corner of the road. I think if they extended the double yellow lines it would help but so would anything. Parents have even started parking in the village. Something needs to be done."

Rachel Woodward said that the problems might be alleviated by not having a gate at the bottom of Quarry Bank Road as this would allow access into Silverdale.

Luckily she said she is not directly impacted by parking issues.

She said: "Sometimes they turn around here or park down the street but not right outside our house. If we left the house and wanted to come back at 9 we can't literally get down the street because all the cars are waiting for the car park which can be annoying."

St John's CE Primary School has been asked parking outside the school and the LDRS were told: "Yesterday there were cones put out by the police and we do put in our newsletter every week about parking, so we do try."
