Reform UK wins majority in Newcastle-under-Lyme local elections

The Reform UK party has won control of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council following the local elections.
With all 44 seats contested in the May 7 election, 23 were needed for a majority – Reform UK won 27.
The Conservative Party won 15, and Labour won two.
Entering the election the Conservatives held 26 seats, Labour held 17 and Reform UK held one.
Turnout across the borough was 47.8 per cent, up from 43.01 per cent in 2022.
Martin Rogerson, Reform UK branch chairman for Newcastle-under-Lyme, said: "I would like to thank everyone who made the commitment to stand in this election, and all those who have worked to make it possible.
"We are delighted and humbled that people have placed their trust in us and I promise that we will get to work straightaway delivering local services."
Ballots were counted overnight at Keele University sports centre.
In the May 7 local election, 165 people stood in the 21 wards, with each ward returning one, two or three councillors depending on their size.
Gordon Mole, Chief Executive of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council and the Returning Officer for the election, said: "The Borough Council is responsible for many things, including overseeing the town centre regeneration, planning, waste collection, maintaining green spaces, providing car parks and monitoring hygiene standards in bars, cafes and restaurants.
"These elections across all wards have been contested by multiple candidates and I thank them all for their effort and commitment to the democratic process."
