Popular snooker and pool club granted permission to expand Stoke-on-Trent premises
A popular snooker and pool club has been given permission by the local council to expand its premises to meet increasing demand.
Longton Snooker and Pool Club has been running for 40 years and currently has over 2,000 members, including two who have previously represented England internationally.
The club will be increasing its facilities by changing the use of a building in Chadwick Street, next to its current home at Normacot Road.
A planning statement submitted as part of the change of use application to Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: "The leisure and sports facility is currently unable to meet the demand of its existing members and expansion is required to meet this sustained demand rather than lose users who are unable to utilise the facility.
"The proposed expansion of this venue would also be suitable to host international events for the home nations in male and female pool competitions, therefore making this a destination leisure and sports facility on the international stage.
"Unit 7 is privately owned with a current tenancy agreement in place that commenced in June 2023 for a period of 10 years. The current tenant has found this building not to be suitable for their purposes and they are actively seeking alternative accommodation."
Stoke-on-Trent City Council granted permission for the club to extend its premises on Thursday 4 January.
An Officer's Report stated: "The acquisition of this area will enable additional space for pool tables, dart boards, food preparation area and associated office space which is ultimately required to meet the demand of its existing members and provide adequate and sufficient facilities rather than relocate the business.
"The principle of development for such change is considered acceptable in that both economic and social benefits would be palpable through this change which would aid in achieving the ethos of sustainable development as contained within NPPF guidance.
"It also seems both logical and practical to amalgamate two buildings to provide a facility which is in a sustainable location with good access to alternative transport links as opposed to finding a larger facility and relocating elsewhere which could disrupt the existing customer base."
