Plans have been submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council for over 200 brand-new student flats in the city.

Curran & Sons Ltd has applied for permission to demolish existing commercial buildings on Registry Street, Stoke, and build a seven-storey block of flats in its place.

The seven-storey building would comprise of 218 one bedroom studio flats which would each have a single bed, desk, wardrobe, kitchenette and ensuite bathroom.

The new building would also include facilities such as a gym, games room, student lounges, cycle stores, plant room and a roof garden.

All of the commercial and retail buildings earmarked for demolition are currently vacant (Nub News).

A planning statement submitted as part of the application states: "The relocation of the majority of the University's courses to the Stoke-on-Trent campus could also increase the number of students seeking accommodation in the private market, generating a need for houses in multiple occupation or purpose-built student accommodation.

"The submitted proposal will provide purpose-built student accommodation to help meet the continued demand for such accommodation.

"In doing so it will bring new residents into the city, thereby generating additional expenditure in the town, and helping to support local services and facilities."

The site currently has six parking spaces but these would be removed if planning permission is granted for the new development.

Residents have until 24 October to submit any comments on the application (Nub News).

A design and access statement says "the town centre and its various services and facilities are located within easy walking distance of the site, with the city train station also readily accessible on foot.

"The main Staffordshire University Campus also lies 600 metres from the site and is therefore also readily accessible on foot or by bicycle."

A decision is expected regarding this proposal in the coming months.
