The site of a former nightclub in Newcastle-under-Lyme could soon be developed into apartments.

Residents living near the site in Newcastle were sent details of the proposals to turn the land, where the now-demolished Zanzibar nightclub stood, into 63 "affordable apartments".

The development has been proposed by Aspire Housing, which acquired the former nightclub and its car park in 2019 and secured the demolition of the building in 2020.

The site, at the junction of Marsh Parade and Hassell Street, has since been vacant but the new plans could see a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments set within two four-storey buildings and a commercial five-unit "enterprise zone".

The developers are hoping that the council and Aspire will be able to use funding already secured from the government's Town Deal.

Aspire Housing also proposes a shared private amenity space, parking and five enterprise units on North Street.(Aspire Housing)

The land was included in the borough council's final draft local plan which is yet to be fully approved by the council.

The plans are yet to be submitted to Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council but the developer Avison Young has opened a digital public consultation which residents can take part in until 28 March.

The Avison Young website states: "Planning applications are currently being prepared and will be submitted to Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council shortly."

The application relating to the commercial units will be submitted first followed by the application for the residential development which the developer says will be handed over to the council for consideration in April.
