Plans for a new college building in Stoke-on-Trent have been given the green light by council planners.

Stoke-on-Trent College wants to knock down the five-storey B-block building at its Burslem campus and build a two and three-storey 'entrance hub' to the neighbouring A-block building.

According to the plans, which have now been approved by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the scheme will 'rationalise space and reduce operation running costs, while improving the facilities and learner experience'.

The new building will include classrooms, science labs and training space. There would also be a roof terrace accessible by staff only.

The entrance hub will be built to the north of A-block, on land off Moorland Road which is currently used as a car park.

The new building, in Burslem, will have classrooms, science labs and training space (Nub News).

Highways officers had raised slight concerns over the loss of 21 parking spaces, but did not object to the plans.

The planning report states: "Whilst the proposal results in a loss of 21 parking spaces, it would not generate any additional pupil numbers, staff requirement or teaching space, and therefore is it not expected that any additional vehicle trips will be generated as a result of the proposal.

"The application submission states that there is no longer the demand for parking and it is noted that there is also parking available on the wider campus and Moorland Road is protected with existing parking waiting restrictions."

According to the report, the application received support from the Potteries Heritage Society 'who welcome the high quality design, layout, landscaping and high energy efficiency of the proposal'.
