A new unit is planned at Royal Stoke University Hospital to provide extra bed space and treat patients.

A planning application for the Acute Medical Rapid Assessment Unit have been submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

If approved the unit, earmarked for the east of the main hospital site, next to the emergency department and children's department will provide an additional 16 bed spaces and 10 trolley spaces, a design and access statement submitted as part of the application said. It added: "The unit will be expanded to a 24/7 service, which will further support the overall increase in general capacity.

"The AMRA unit receives suitable medical patients both internally from the emergency department and externally via GPs. The aim of the AMRA unit is to see, investigate, treat and discharge patients without admitting to the main hospital bed base.

The new unit would provide an additional 16 bed spaces and 10 trolley spaces (SWNS).

"There are patients that, following investigation, may require admission to a sub-specialty bed. This service is an adult only facility and has no plans to accommodate children/young adults.

"The proposed building is a two-storey modular building located adjacent to the existing Emergency Department. A link corridor corridor is proposed to connect the existing building to the new building, with an entrance to the AMRAU department."

Another planning application has also been submitted for the hospital site recently, the proposal is for a single-storey extension to the existing Cancer Centre entrance, to serve as an Holistic Care Centre and provide new pharmacy space.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application said: "The proposed Holistic Care Centre is intended to provide a welcoming and relaxing space that is separate from the clinical treatment areas, whilst still being located adjacent to the Cancer Centre to ensure its ease of access for patients when they visit the hospital site. The holistic therapies which will enable the cancer team to treat the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – creating a healing environment with improved waiting area, entrance and pharmacy."
