Adam Jogee has been selected as Labour's parliamentary candidate for Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Mr Jogee is currently a councillor in Hornsey in London, and works for Labour MP Ruth Jones in the shadow Defra team.

He recently married a Belfast-born ICU nurse and has family connections in North Staffordshire.

He's previously been mayor of Haringey and chaired the council's environment and community safety committees.

He said he was honoured and humbled to be chosen to stand for the party in Newcastle-under-Lyme and hopes to become the area's first BAME MP.

He said: "I'm honoured and humbled, and I'm excited that local members here in Newcastle-under-Lyme got behind me and my message of taking our fight to the Tories.

"We've got a lot to do to make sure we get a Labour MP here in Newcastle-under-Lyme and most importantly a Labour-led government under Keir Starmer."

Newcastle-under-Lyme Labour chose Adam Jogee as their parliamentary candidate (LDR).

He said Labour would work hard for people, and brushed aside criticism that he isn't currently based in the area.

He said: "Don't worry about the diary management, we will be making sure we're taking our message to local people – day in, day out, all day, every day.

"I'm focused on making sure the people of Newcastle-under-Lyme have a strong local MP, someone who's going to stand up for them and someone who's going to Westminster and vote for the interests and needs of this community."

Mr Jogee saw off competition from Carl Greatbatch, Andrew Hammond and Sue Moffat.

Carl Greatbatch was long listed, but didn't make it through to the shortlist, while Sue Moffat withdrew from the competition at the eleventh hour.

Although Labour do not reveal the number of ballots cast, it's understood Mr Jogee won by a comfortable margin.

Mr Jogee's political rival Aaron Bell congratulated his opponent but took a swipe at Labour for not choosing a candidate who's based locally.

He said: "I congratulate Adam on his selection, however it is surprising that Labour seem to have learned no lessons from their defeat under Jeremy Corbyn in 2019 and have again rejected their local Newcastle councillors as potential candidates, this time in favour of importing a councillor from North London.

"I look forward to fighting the next general election on my record of delivering unprecedented government investment into Newcastle-under-Lyme and standing up for residents."
