A Grade II-listed market in Stoke-on-Trent will undergo various "safeguarding works" after a planning application was approved by the city council.

Burslem Market, on Queen Street, was constructed in 1879 but has been mostly vacant since 2003 following a ceiling collapse.

The council submitted a planning application earlier this year for "safeguarding works to building including installation of temporary netting and protection within market hall, partial repairs to roof and gutters and removal of internal walls and floors within 34 Queen Street".

A Heritage Statement submitted as part of the application says: "The Market Hall stands as a testament to Victorian-era craftsmanship and architectural significance, embodying historical value in the local landscape.

"The safeguarding project aims which are the subject of this application are to prevent further deterioration and degradation of the building and safeguard the premises in anticipation of a long-term use of The Burslem Market premises.

"The proposed works will ensure the building can provide a long-term sustainable internal environment in readiness for use by the public, staff and other building occupiers once future strategic funding is in place to comprehensively refurbish the building."

No 'Third Party Comments' were received, and the plans were approved earlier this month.

An Officer's Report says: "The proposals comprise those minimal internal works necessary to prevent further degradation and deterioration to the fabric of the building with a view to making the building ready for re-occupation. The proposals accord with all relevant policies and guidance and are therefore recommended for approval".

The application form confirms that work will take place between the hours of 8am-10am, 12pm-2pm and 4.30pm-6pm Monday to Friday and 8am-12pm on Saturdays.
