A tenant is calling for action after damage caused by a fire has still not been repaired after six weeks. Tenants were originally told that repairs would be carried out within two weeks.

A fire in early May ripped through the communal bin storage area on Beveridge Close in Meir, windows at the rear of the property were also boarded up. Despite being promised that the windows would be repaired in two weeks tenants have now been told no repairs have been logged.

Kirsty Forrester who lives in one of the affected flats said she expected everything to be fixed after two weeks but only discovered six weeks later no repair work had been scheduled.

She said: "They've not done anything since the fire. The fire was set in our bins, so we've got no bins, we've not no bin area. We can't use the back garden at all if you don't come through the flat because they've drilled the gate shut.

"So yeah we have no bins, we have no access to the garden, the front door's broken, like they've just taken the lock out to resolve the fact it kept locking us out of the building. Everytime you call for a repair you just get 'we're getting round to it, you're on the list' and I called yesterday because I've had enough and got told there was no repairs booked in on the system for it.

Kirsty Forrester said she expected everything to be fixed after two weeks (LDRS).

"It's literally the kitchen window, the bathroom window, my sister's bedroom. So half the house is in darkness all hours of the day and it's not just my flat either, it's everyone in the building because the fire was that out of control."

This is not the only issue which is plaguing the flats. Currently there are no bins available to residents, this means that residents are being forced to use to the bin area at the end of the close.

Speaking about the situation with the bins the 27 year old continued: "It looks awful and it makes you feels gross because you're living here. I just want my windows and a bin to put my rubbish in and a garden that I can let my dog out in.

"I've always taken pride in where I live and what control I have over. So it's really upsetting when you're having people over and you're like mind the windows and don't go in the back if you need a cigarette. It just makes you feel dirty even though I had no hand in the matter."

A spokesperson for Stoke-on-Trent City Council advised:"We appreciate the inconvenience some residents are facing at this time. We have made the building safe and all utilities are restored. Given the nature of the fire and the damage caused, various processes must be adhered to.

"We are working with Unitas and our insurers to ensure the building is correctly repaired. We will notify residents as soon as we have an estimated completion date. Estate Officers are monitoring the area and supporting where necessary.

"We're in contact with the residents and we'd like more support to be offered/provided."
