A commemorative plate has been created by Moorland Pottery to mark the meeting of two major cultural cities in an upcoming football match.

Port Vale will represent Centenary city Stoke-on-Trent as they face Bradford, the current UK City of Culture.

Moorland Pottery, the makers of the well-known Stokie Ware range, have produced a ceramic plate celebrating the Port Vale FC vs Bradford City AFC fixture.

The plate features the logos of both clubs alongside the logos for Stoke-on-Trent's Centenary and Bradford's year as UK City of Culture.

The legs on each side wear the socks from this season's strips.

Jon Plant, co-founder of the Burslem business and a guest judge on the last series of Channel 4's The Great Pottery Throw Down, led the design.

Mr Plant, said: "When I was first approached, and was told about the idea of badging-up this game between Port Vale and Bradford City as the Centenary City taking-on the UK City of Culture, my immediate thought was that this is something you can't say 'no' to!

"I really wanted to do it - to be involved in the history and the culture of two great cities, and to create something that would commemorate a unique moment in time.

"To be honest, I did think it might prove to be a little bit tricky but then, when I sat down to sketch it out, it all came to me in a flash - two sets of footballer's legs, the old boots and socks, and the circular logos reflecting the idea of footballs.

"It's going to be a terrific night under the floodlights at Vale Park, and I feel very privileged to have been asked to play a small part in it. I think this is such a great way to celebrate a such a special year in the history of both cities - as well as another example of just how good this whole centenary year has proved to be".

Moorland Pottery is housed within the same Chelsea Works premises that art deco designer Susie Cooper rented from Royal Doulton for two years, and it still boasts one of the city's surviving bottle kilns.

The Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Cllr Steve Watkins, said: "This match is a proud moment for our city.

"As we celebrate our Centenary and welcome Bradford as the City of Culture, it's lovely to see a local pottery mark the occasion in such a thoughtful way.

"Moorland Pottery have created something that feels true to Stoke-on-Trent and true to Port Vale. It's a meaningful piece for a fixture many people are looking forward to."

The plate will form part of the exchanges taking place before the match today (Tuesday 9 December).
