Two Stoke-on-Trent MPs are among a breakaway group of Tories calling on the government to put limits on the number of people allowed into the UK.

Jonathan Gullis and Jack Brereton have joined the New Conservatives, which is a group of Tory MPs elected after the Brexit referendum in 2016.

They say they stand for a new era in politics, where politicians respect the opinions of the British public.

A statement on their website says: "In 2019, we won our biggest majority in 30 years by promising a new political settlement for a post-Brexit Britain.

"We won with a manifesto that promised that there would be 'fewer lower-skilled migrants and overall numbers will come down. And we will ensure that the British people are always in control'.

"Voters across traditional Conservative heartland seats and new Red Wall seats alike placed their trust in us to keep our word."

Amongst their demands, they are calling on prime minister Rishi Sunak and the government to close a temporary scheme allowing care workers to come to the UK – despite there being a record number of job vacancies within the social care sector.

Jack Brereton MP recently met with the Minister for Roads and Local Transport, Richard Holden MP (Jack Brereton MP).

The New Conservatives also calling for an increase in the minimum salary people will need to earn in order to be given a visa to come and work in the UK.

In addition, they want to see a limit placed on the number of asylum seekers allowed to stay in the UK, and restrictions on the amount of social housing provided for non-UK nationals.

Stoke-on-Trent North MP Jonathan Gullis thinks the group is about coming up with the kinds of policies people want from their elected representatives.

He said: "The New Conservatives is led by Danny Kruger and Miriam Cates, and it's something I've been proudly working on with them for a number of months.

"We brought together 2017 and 2019 Conservative MPs who believe on delivering those important pledges we made in our 2019 manifesto.

"But also there has been a political realignment in this country, and the Conservatives are able to bring a broad coalition of voters together from the traditional Blue Wall to the former Red Wall, in places like Stoke-on-Trent.

"We believe that we're offering ideas for the future – some of which can be enacted here and now to ensure we deliver on those manifesto pledges.

"We also want to have the debate and discussion on the big topics of the day to influence the Conservative Party manifesto and have an exciting offer to the British people at the next general election."

Mr Gullis feels it is important for his party to draw a clear dividing line between themselves and Labour if they're to stand a chance of winning the next election.

He said: "We firmly believe our migration paper is in tune with what the great British public want us to do.

"It's about making sure we focus on skilling up our young and old people, and getting them into jobs rather than constantly relying on pulling the lever on immigration."

Mr Gullis said there are millions of economically inactive people who could fill vacancies in a number of industries which have a shortfall in the amount of staff.

The group is already being described by some as a thorn in the side of Rishi Sunak, and will raise questions about his authority as prime minister.

Jack Brereton has also been approached for a comment.
