Two people have been jailed following the assault and a robbery of a man in Stoke-on-Trent.

It comes after the victim was invited into a home in Burslem by James Rogers, 41, of Ball Green, on 23 December last year.

Staffordshire Police said once inside, Rogers and his associate, 36-year-old Kaayn Beech of Tunstall assaulted the victim with a wooden stick and a steel claw hammer.

The victim was left with a broken arm, a broken nose, a broken finger, head wounds and extensive bruising. The victim was also robbed of £500 in cash, a wallet, a watch, a mobile phone and a coat.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "After the incident was reported, we arrested Rogers and Beech straight away. They were brought in for questioning and answered no comment.

"We built all of the evidence needed to secure charges against them both."

At an earlier hearing, Beech admitted Section 18 – grievous bodily harm with intent on the first day of a scheduled trial.

He was jailed for four years at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday (3 July), with further counts of robbery and theft from the person of another to remain on his file.

Rogers pleaded not guilty to Section 18 – grievous bodily harm with intent but was found guilty by a jury following a trial.

He was sentenced to four-years-and-two-months in prison on the same day.

Detective Constable Olivia May, from the Staffordshire Police criminal investigations department, said: "This was a particularly violent incident which left the victim requiring treatment in A&E.

"I'm pleased we've been able to build the evidence needed to secure these sentences against Rogers and Beech, and I hope this shows the local community that we are determined to act robustly against those responsible for these offences across the city."
