A 17-year-old boy has been jailed for six and half years following a hit-and-run that resulted in the death of a teenager in Stoke-on-Trent.

It comes after teenager Harley Hough, of Longton, who could not be named legally because of age until restrictions were lifted, was driving a BMW 1 Series at excessive speed when he overtook another car on Dawlish Drive, Bentilee on Friday 17 October last year.

Seventeen-year-old Alex Woodward was crossing the street at the time and was hit by the car.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "Alex was rushed to hospital but tragically died in the early hours of the next morning on Saturday 18 October 2025."

Staffordshire Police explained that Hough didn't stop at the scene and carried on driving. Two days later, he handed himself in and admitted that he was driving when the collision happened.

Hough also told officers that he did not have a licence or any insurance and that he did not know the speed limit on Dawlish Drive.

Detective Sergeant Christopher Wright, from the Staffordshire Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID), said: "This has been a particularly distressing case which has left Alex's family absolutely devastated.

"I hope the conclusion of the court process today gives them a sense of closure as they continue to deal with their irreplaceable loss."

Hogh was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, driving a vehicle involved in a road accident failing to report that accident, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving without third party insurance.

He was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday 14 April).
