Stoke-on-Trent school closed due to 'cracks in the walls'

A school in Stoke-on-Trent is closed after 'cracks' appeared in the walls.
Goldenhill Primary Academy informed parents on Wednesday evening that the whole school would close with 'immediate effect' in order to allow checks to be carried out on the building.
The school's head teacher, Mr Steve Martin, says the cracks became apparent in the past 48 hours and has assured parents and carers the closure is not related to asbestos.
It is unclear when the school, on Broadfield Road, will be able to reopen and structural specialists are now carrying out an investigation.
Head teacher Steve Martin said: "Following further advice, and as a precautionary measure, it has been deemed necessary to close the whole school.
"This decision has been taken following the discovery of some cracks in the walls which have appeared over the past 48 hours and require further investigation by structural specialists to ensure the safety of all staff and pupils.
"I would like to reassure parents and carers that the closure is not related to asbestos.
"We understand the inconvenience that this will cause and sincerely apologise.
"As always, the safety of our children and staff is our top priority.
"Please be assured that we are working closely with the relevant authorities to resolve the matter as quickly and safely as possible.
"We aim to reopen the school as soon as it is safe to do so, will keep parents and carers updated, and thank them for their support and understanding."
