Residents have hit out at a Stoke-on-Trent road which has had near consistent roadworks since the start of the year. Now temporary traffic lights have caused a rat run for motorists trying to beat the queue of traffic.

City Road in Fenton has been the source of the issues with utility companies and phone companies working on the improvements to infrastructure in the area. However, now residents are wondering when all the road works will end.

Resident David Broome said: "It's just one thing after another and there has been that many I've lost track. I think it was about two o'clock in the morning and they were digging up across there and I went out and I'm the only person in my pyjamas at two o'clock in the morning and said to them, listen lads I know it's not you but what now. It starts to get to that point and you're just like I'm close to moving, I've had enough."

Due to the roadworks David said that people are skipping the main road and using the smaller residential streets as a rat run to avoid the traffic and he worries about the safety of the children in the area.

Another resident who didn't want to be named added: "It is really bad. I know if they've got to do the work but it's gets really bad down here. People have started using the side roads but because you can't park along City Road all the side roads are full and it can be dangerous."

Despite companies carrying out work on the highway the highway authority, Stoke-on-Trent City Council have said in a statement that they will continue to monitor the area to ensure minimum disruption. They add although working with companies to align scheduled work to the highway due to urgent work that is not always possible.

Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and regeneration, said: "The various works which have been undertaken along City Road, Fenton, over the past year are essential for maintaining and improving local infrastructure. Where possible, we work with other companies to align work timetables and minimise disruption but due to the urgent nature of much of these works it is not always possible.

"We understand that, at times, these works may have been inconvenient for residents with some motorists choosing to use nearby residential streets however it is important to note all roads that are public highways can be used by all.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and ensure disruption is kept to a minimum throughout any future works, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these times."
