A man from Stoke-on-Trent has been sentenced after he strangled and threatened a woman.
Kevin McDaid, 41, from Eaton Park, pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional strangulation, engaging in controlling / coercive behaviour, two counts of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm and assault by beating.
McDaid appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Tuesday (7 July), where he was sentenced to three-years-and-nine-months in prison.
The officer in charge of the case, PC Matthew Bennett, said: "The victim in this case has shown incredible courage in helping us to bring him justice.
"McDaid subjected her to violent and spontaneous attacks, whilst also leaving her in fear of violence through his coercive and controlling behaviour.
"Methods of control included monitoring her mobile phone and social media use, telling her who she could communicate with and threatening to harm members of her family.
"I hope this sentencing shows that we are committed to protecting victims and are here to support you if you're ready to talk to us."
Staffordshire Police said McDaid abused the victim over several months last year.
On one occasion, he dragged her across the floor by her hair before holding a kitchen knife to her face. Following the attack, the victim was given morphine for pain and required surgery.
On two other separate occasions, McDaid put his hands around the victim's throat and applied pressure until she started to choke.
