A man from Stoke-on-Trent has been jailed after assaulting a woman in Winsford, Cheshire.

Matthew Keay, from Blurton, appeared at Chester Crown Court on Friday 31 May where he was sentenced to three years behind bars.

The 35-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation. He also admitted being in possession of a class A drug.

On Wednesday 13 September, the then 32-year-old victim in this case had been at an address in Winsford with Keay when he began repeatedly punching her to her body, face, and head.

Keay pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and intentional strangulation (Cheshire Police).

She reported he continued to attack her once she had fallen to the floor and also covered her with a bed sheet, holding what she believed to be his hand over her mouth so she struggled to breath.

The victim ran from the property in distress and a concerned member of the public notified police.

Officers attended and arrested Keay. Following a search, he was found to have two small bags of white powder on him, which were later confirmed to be cocaine.

Keay has also been issued with an indefinite restraining order (SWNS).

On top of his custodial sentence, Keay was issued with an indefinite restraining order, prohibiting him from contacting the victim in any way.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Felicity Gregory said: "I welcome the sentence handed to Keay, who is now behind bars for his horrific actions.

"Nobody should have to experience what the victim in this case went through and I hope this result will provide her with some closure following what must have been an incredibly traumatic ordeal."
