A well known figure has recently been awarded a CBE in the New Years Honours List for services to general practice. Dr Chandra Kanneganti is the only recipient of the award across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire.

Chandra moved from India and quickly made Stoke-on-Trent his home, becoming a partner at Goldenhill medical centre, which is where he had been for the past 17 years. During that time he's seen children become adults who are now having their own children.

During the past 18 years as a GP partner in Stoke-on-Trent Dr Kanneganti has served communities across the city through the Five Towns GP surgery, Middleport Medical Centre and Goldenhill Medical Centre.

The former Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent Dr Kanneganti has represented the Stoke-on-Trent ward of Sandyford and Goldenhill since 2019. Speaking of representing residents and public service, the councillor called for people to work together.

He said: "I came into public service to help people, I'm sure the other person wants to do that. Rather than blaming each other let's work together; what is best for the city of Stoke-on-Trent; what is best for our residents; what is best for our country; let's be kind to each other."

Chandra moved from India and quickly became a partner at Goldenhill Medical Centre, on High Street (Google).

A CBE or Commander of the Order of the British Empire is the highest ranking order of the British Empire excluding a knighthood. The award is awarded to individuals for having a prominent role at national level, or a leading role at regional level.

Dr Kanneganti has a strong record of representing doctors on the national stage. He has also championed causes including commending the work of international doctors.

At the age of 39 he was elected as the youngest national chair of the British International Doctors Association, which he did for seven years before becoming national president of the association. In addition he is also a director of the North Staffordshire GP Federation and a lay member of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Speaking of the honour, Dr Kanneganti said: "I'm really honoured and humbled to have been recognised in the New Years Honours list. It is an honour and I'm so glad somebody from Stoke-on-Trent got it.

"I got it because the people of Stoke-on-Trent gave me that opportunity to be their GP and to go and represent GP's at a national level. It's more of a recognition of the whole of Stoke-on-Trent rather than my own recognition. If I can achieve it, you can achieve it.

"It's not the CBE that makes me happy, in the gazette it says Goldenhill Medical Centre, Stoke-on-Trent; that name is in the official documents and that makes me more proud."
