The owners of a family-run shop are demanding action – as constant roadworks hit footfall. Total Mobility Care, on Liverpool Road, in Stoke, is being affected by ongoing works in the area.

The disruption is being caused by flood defence improvements at Fowlea Brook which started in June and are expected to continue until June next year. The construction of 202 student flats and the redevelopment of four retail units are also causing issues.

It means Liverpool Road is closed to vehicles between Lovatt Street and Stoke Road – and pedestrians are being diverted along Shelton Old Road. But customers are still risking walking along the 'dangerous' Liverpool Road to reach Total Mobility Care.

Owner Paul Kirkham said: "This is actually stopping us from doing what we should be doing."

The current disruption also means there is nowhere for customers to test-drive a mobility scooter before purchasing one.

Wife Sharon added: "There are so many obstacles when customers come, like where do they park. We've been told now they're able to park outside and they won't get a ticket, even though it's on zig-zag lines. If we are having a delivery, lorries cannot get to us so they have to come down Liverpool Road and then reverse backwards, it's just not good. They should never have allowed three developments to take place at the same time."

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is aware of the issue.

Councillor Amjid Wazir, cabinet member for city pride, enforcement and sustainability, advised: "We are aware of the issues raised by Total Mobility and are investigating their concerns."
