Stoke council roundup: New bus fares, fly-tipping crackdown and volunteering
It's been a busy month for both Stoke-on-Trent City Council - here is a roundup of the biggest stories from the past month.
Volunteers Week
Stoke-on-Trent City Council celebrated volunteers' contributions to mark the 39th annual Volunteers Week.
This year's theme was 'Celebrate and Inspire', which encouraged people to be the change that they want to see and get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them.
Finances
The new leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council re-iterated her claim that the authority's finances are in dire straits.
Cllr Jane Ashworth is just weeks into the job, and is already planning to ask the government for more money to help bail out the cash-strapped council.
Fly-tipping crackdown
Increase in complaints: The authority recorded a total of 2,932 fly tipping complaints between January and May this year – which compares with 2,562 by the same time last year and 2,779 by that point in 2021.
Targeting landlords: The council has declared enforcement action against absent and neglectful private-rental landlords across the city. The action comes after neglectful landlords continue to blight the city.
Bus fares
City residents will soon be able to benefit from cheaper bus fares thanks to a partnership by Stoke-on-Trent City Council and all bus operators across the city.
The new Affordable Fares Scheme is set to come into force on Saturday 1 July as part of a city-wide effort to encourage more people to take-up public transport.
