Two members of a local care home group are preparing to take on the Manchester Marathon with the support of a 'marathon legend' who is a resident at their Leek care home.

Rob Jackson, CEO of Borough Care, and Claire Farmer, Management Accountant, are both currently in training for the iconic 26.2-mile challenge.

As preparations for race day began, Rob discovered that Brian, a resident at Hen Cloud House in Leek, is a "true marathon legend".

Having completed some of the world's most prestigious races, including the London Marathon, the Berlin Marathon and the New York City Marathon, Brian ran his final marathon at the age of 85 — an extraordinary achievement that continues to inspire those around him.

Drawing on his wealth of experience, Brian has been sharing training advice, race-day tips and words of encouragement ahead of Rob and Claire's challenge.

"It's been amazing to learn from someone with so much experience," said Rob.

"Brian has such a wealth of knowledge about running, and his encouragement has made the training even more motivating."

In the spirit of Borough Care's values, Rob and Claire have also chosen to use the marathon as an opportunity to give back.

After asking Brian if there was a cause he would recommend, he suggested supporting a charity that helps people in the later stages of life.

Taking that advice to heart, Rob and Claire will be raising funds for Age UK, with all donations going towards making a meaningful difference to the lives of older people.

As the Manchester Marathon approaches, Rob and Claire are hoping to enjoy the experience to the fullest, although they will not be aiming to beat Brian's impressive sub 3 hour finish in the London Marathon.

Rob added: "Finishing the race in one piece will be a good start and then we will see what the race clock states!"

Colleagues across Borough Care, which also operates several homes in Stockport and Shoemaker Place in Stone as w and homes and teams are being encouraged to show their support through words of encouragement, cheering on race day or contributing to the fundraising efforts.

A spokesperson for Borough Care added: "Inspired by Brian's incredible achievement of completing his final marathon at 85, Rob and Claire will be heading to the start line determined to do him, and the entire Borough Care community, proud."
