University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) will become completely smoke-free across all sites, including Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital in Stafford, from April.

This means smoking will not be permitted anywhere on Trust grounds, including car parks and outdoor areas.

Kimberly Perickathara, UHNM Tobacco Dependency Lead Nurse said: "We know quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health.

"Our smoke-free commitment reflects our dedication to creating a healthier environment for everyone who uses our services. We're here to support patients and staff every step of the way."

She added: "We want to inform all patients and visitors that smoking will no longer be allowed anywhere on Trust grounds from 1 April.

"If you choose to smoke, it must be done away from our buildings to help protect the well-being of everyone here.

"If a member of our staff sees someone smoking on-site, they may kindly ask that person to stop.

"We appreciate your understanding as we work together to create a healthier environment for patients, caregivers, visitors, and staff."

A spokesperson for UHNM said: "Smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the UK, and by going smoke-free we're creating safer, healthier spaces for everyone—protecting patients, visitors and staff from harmful second-hand smoke while giving people the support they need to quit and enjoy better health and wellbeing."

The Trust is also encouraging people to quit smoking in 2026 and added: "Join us in making 2026 the year you quit for good.

"Together, we can create a healthier future for everyone."

UHNM has urged people who want help to quit smoking to speak to their GP or local pharmacist, to contact their local NHS Stop Smoking Service, or to visit the NHS website here for tips and resources.

All UHNM sites, including Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital in Stafford, will be smoke-free from 1 April 2026.
