A three month "major highways improvement scheme" is due to start next week in a North Staffordshire town.

Staffordshire County Council has announced that a £1.5 million highway improvement scheme in Kidsgrove will start on Monday 5 October.

The work will see improvements to Gloucester/Newchapel Road, including structural repairs, resurfacing, and repairs to the mini roundabout.

Crews will also be making repairs to drainage systems, as well as replacing damaged kerbs and ironworks "where required".

The county council says the scheme is expected to take around three months to complete.

The road is due to be temporarily closed from 9am to 3pm each day for the structural repairs.

The resurfacing stage of the work will be carried out overnight from 8pm to 6am, which the council hopes will help minimise disruption for residents.

Patrick Allen, Cabinet Support Member for Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said: "This is an important scheme for the town and one of many planned for the borough over the next year.

"It's part of wider investment and our commitment to improving roads right across Staffordshire.

"Engineers have planned the works carefully to minimise disruption and crews will be doing their best to get the work done as efficiently as possible.

"People can also help out by not parking vehicles within the works extent during both the daytime and night time closures. Keeping the area clear of vehicles will help the teams get the work done quickly and safely without unnecessary delay.

"As always we thank people in advance for their patience and co-operation."

A signed diversion will be in place throughout the project, via Whitehall avenue, William Road, Galleys bank and White bridge road.

The county council said access to properties along the length of the works will be maintained "where possible".
