Severn Trent confirmed work will take place overnight this week (LDRS).

A problem manhole cover, which has been keeping residents awake at night, is finally set to be fixed. The manhole cover is located on the busy Sandyford High Street and was originally set to be fixed in February.

As many as 1,000 cars a day travel along Sandyford High Street and each car that hits the manhole cover causes a repeated thud can be heard. Residents have told, Sandyford and Goldenhill Residents Association Secretary, Tom Simpson the repeated noise is like "Chinese Water Torture"

After being notified of the problem, Severn Trent reportedly said it would take 15 weeks to repair due to permits having to be authorised. Due to the location of the manhole cover the entrance to Shelford Road will have to be closed, additionally, two-way traffic lights on High Street will have to be put up to enable work to be done.

Resident Suzie Parker said: "As you can imagine the noise gets a lot worse at rush hour. However at night you can just hear cars going over it. The sooner it gets fixed the better."

Severn Trent have confirmed that work repairing the cover will take place overnight this week following pressure from ward councillor, Chandra Kanneganti and Tom Simpson. Road signs alerting motorists of the road closure starting today (November 18) have already been put up.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: "We're sorry for the disruption residents are having due to a faulty manhole cover, the work to fix this is due to start on 18th November and will be complete the following day.

"Due to traffic on the road during the day, and taking advice from the local council, the works will be done overnight. We're sorry for the inconvenience, however we will do our best to minimise this and will be contacting those who may be affected prior to the works starting."
