Plans to convert a former carpet store in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, into three new flats have been rejected by the local council.

Mr Rakesh Morjaria, of RA Asset Management, applied for permission to transform a former shop on Brick House Street into three one-bedroom flats.

A statement of significance, submitted as part of the application, states: "The building would provide an excellent standard of accommodation suited to local people working in or near to the town centre of Burslem.

"Furthermore, the presence of residential units increases footfall and activity, benefiting local businesses, stimulating entrepreneurship, and creating a dynamic and safe environment."

he shopfront would have been removed and new walls would match the other buildings on Brick House Street, Burslem (Nub News).

Each flat would have had an open plan lounge, kitchen, dining area, bathroom and separate double bedroom.

These plans were rejected by Stoke-on-Trent City Council yesterday (14 November).

An Officer's Report, published by the council, said: "The proposals raise significant concerns in terms of design, impact on the surrounding conservation area and residential amenity.

"The proposals are therefore recommended for refusal."
