Plans to turn an ageing multi-storey car park in Newcastle-under-Lyme into 114 flats have been submitted.

Developer Capital and Centric is proposing to revamp the Midway car park in Newcastle-under-Lyme into one and two-bedroom apartments, as part of a wider town centre regeneration programme.

A planning application lodged with Newcastle Borough Council sets out how the conversion will be accomplished, with images showing what the completed building will look like. Midway car park was built in 1960s, but it is due to close in the new year and be replaced with the new Castle car park on the Ryecroft site.

According to the plans, most of the car park's existing concrete structure will be retained, with cuts being made to the slabs to create a central atrium space and open air walkways. Additional flats will be created on the building's rooftop through a new build element.

Each of the flats across the five levels of accommodation will have its own recessed balcony or terrace, providing 'significant elements of private amenity' for future residents. Capital and Centric says that retaining most of the existing building would reduce the scheme's carbon footprint while showing 'how old unloved buildings can be reimagine'.

The application states: "The scheme is being developed as an exemplar of how existing town centre infrastructure can be repurposed to provide much needed housing in a town centre location."

A total of 58 parking spaces will be provided across two lower levels, with the building also featuring cycle storage and communal facilities. A triple height entrance lobby will provide level access from The Midway.

The Midway scheme, along with the regeneration projects at Ryecroft and York Place, are being brought forward by Capital and Centric after the borough council secured £35 million of government funding. Planners are due to make a decision on the Midway application by January 22.
