Plans for a new specialist school off a busy road in Stoke-on-Trent have been given the green light by the local council.

Beechfield Education Ltd is intending to rent 240 City Road, formerly Bobbles Day Nursery, and applied for the "change of use to school (Use Class F1)" back in July.

According to the planning application, the new school will "provide an extension for Kaleidoscope Independent Special School, Porthill Lodge, Wolstanton to accommodate 30 pupils."

A Planning Statement says: "The existing internal layout would not need to be altered to accommodate the proposed use. There would be no alterations to the building externally.

Plans to turn Bobbles Day Nursery into a new school were approved this week (Nub News).

"Kaleidoscope currently has 30 pupils on role, many of which have been placed with us by Stoke-on-Trent Local Authority. Due to the increasing demand for places within the city, we would like to open an additional site at 240 City Road. This will be to accommodate a further 30 pupils with approximately 30 staff.

"The children will initially be aged 4-10 but as the children age and develop this will go up to 16 depending on the child's needs."

Since the application was submitted, it was confirmed that the car park adjacent to Fenton Community Hall will provide 30 parking spaces. Staff will also encourage parents to use this car park when dropping off or picking up pupils, instead of parking on the street.

These plans were approved on 12 November, and an Officer's Report says: "The site is currently operating as a day nursery and its considered that the current and proposed uses are similar, with the proposed use resulting in operations being scaled back, therefore there would be no immediate presumption against re-developing the site for this purpose".
