Plans approved for brand-new outpatients building at a Stoke-on-Trent hospital
Plans to demolish the existing outpatients building at a Stoke hospital and build a replacement one have been approved by Stoke-on-Trent City Council this week.
Permission was granted on 24 April for Haywood Hospital, Burslem, to undergo this transformation.
The site - formerly known as the Burslem, Haywood and Tunstall War Memorial Hospital - dates from the 1930s.
Following major redevelopment work, it was reopened in 2010 with the construction of the new PFI building and is now known as the Haywood Hospital.
The hospital is operated by the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) and provides a range of services to patients including specialist services for rheumatology and specialist rehabilitation, bone densitometry, fracture clinic, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and outpatients' clinics for ENT, dermatology and others.
MPFT sought permission to replace the existing outpatients building because it contains Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) within its roof.
This is a form of prefabricated concrete plank which has become outdated and a national programme is underway to remove RAAC from all NHS buildings.
The new building will continue to be accessed via the existing main hospital buildings and there will be no current site access changes.
It will be two storeys and used for the same facilities as the existing outpatients building.
In addition, the new building will include sustainable energy sources and more efficient construction methods to meet net zero carbon targets.
