North Staffordshire resident campaigns to have 'dangerous' road sign removed
A Newcastle resident is campaigning for a dangerous road sign to be moved after being left outside his house for over 18 months. The sign was originally a temporary measure due to HS2 work.
The temporary speed limit sign completely blocks residents John White's view when trying to leave his home on the busy Newcastle Road in Hanchurch. For two years John has suffered from limited visibility due to the oversized signs which you would usually find on a motorway or major trunk road.
John White, who has lived on Newcastle Road for 34 years, said: "It's been there now for two years, they have come and moved it a little bit but it's still there. It's a bit of a blight outside your house. Plus it's a risk getting out of your drive because it obscures your view when you are driving out.
"I reversed in one night and I had a skip in the drive, it was last week and I miscalculated, I'd gone too far over. So I needed to pull out again and they were tearing around this corner here and I couldn't see a thing because of it. I don't know why the signs are here. Do you think they would like it outside their house."
In a statement Staffordshire County Council said the signs were installed in July 2022, over two years and. They added that they are working towards removing the temporary signs and making them permanent.
Keith Flunder, Staffordshire County Council's cabinet support member for Highways North, said: "Temporary speed limit signs were placed on Newcastle Road in Hanchurch in July 2022 because of HS2 work scheduled on the A519. The speed limit prior to this signage was 60mph and the new temporary signs reduced it to 40mph outside the residential properties.
"With the HS2 work being cancelled, the county council is now working to make these temporary signs permanent so they will not be an issue to residents. This is taking longer than usual as the road is close to the National Highways network boundary so we are working with our colleagues there to schedule these works in."
