A former RAF gunner from Newcastle-under-Lyme will be taking part in the Remembrance Sunday parade for the first time as a veteran.

Gary Peake, 63, will be reflecting on colleagues he lost during his 31-year career.

Gary was just 22 when he joined the RAF, based in various locations and deployed to Northern Ireland, Belize, Kuwait, Iraq and Palestine.

Since 2018, Gary has been receiving support from Help for Heroes through counselling sessions with the Hidden Wounds team, and for his physical health and financial situation.

Gary has been receiving support from Help for Heroes since 2018 (Help for Heroes).

Gary said: "I am very proud of my military career, and now it is just as important that I am as proud as a veteran. I will feel pride about being involved in this year's parade as a veteran, but also sadness because of the brothers and sisters lost in conflict.

"For the general population, Remembrance is one day a year, but for people who have served, we remember people who were killed every day of our lives.

"After a long time and a lot of incredible support, my life is back on track. And that journey started with a call to Help for Heroes. I know I won't be the only veteran who's experienced mental health challenges. All I'd say to anyone struggling is, you're not on your own, there is help available, so get in touch before your problems escalate. Never be too proud to ask for help."

A spokesman for Help for Heroes added: "As we join the nation to commemorate the men and women who lost their lives while serving our country, Help for Heroes also remembers those still fighting their own battles today.

"We remain at the side of veterans like Gary and their families who are struggling with painful injuries, mental trauma, isolation, and more – providing life-changing support for as long as it takes – fighting for the peace they deserve."
