A man has been jailed after he stole items and assaulted a woman in Stoke-on-Trent.

Neil Archie Chris McGilligan, 37, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, was jailed for two-years-and-two-months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Thursday 5 March.

He admitted burglary dwelling and theft – no violence, wounding / inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and criminal damage to property valued under £5,000.

PC Katie Ratcliffe, of Stoke-on-Trent north local policing team, said: "McGilligan showed no regard for the victim, her home or her belongings.

"I am glad McGilligan received a custodial sentence for his offending, and hope this shows our commitment to protecting victims of domestic violence across Staffordshire."

It comes after the victim, a woman, returned home on 24 August last year, to find her laptop, phone charger and all of her trainers missing.

She then saw McGilligan sticking his head through a downstairs window, into her kitchen, before he threw an item at her causing her serious injuries.

McGilligan then threw a cat bowl at another window, causing it to smash, before leaving the scene.

Following a Staffordshire Police investigation, McGilligan was arrested and despite answering 'no comment' to all questions in custody, later admitted the offences in court.
