A ban on traffic in streets near a Stoke-on-Trent primary school has been extended to include a sixth road starting this week.

Stoneycroft in Baddeley Green will become a "School Street" from Wednesday (September 2), meaning motorists face a fine if they drive there between 8.15am and 9.15am or 2.45pm and 4pm on a weekday.

Five roads surrounding Hillside Primary School – Field Avenue, Hill View, Malstone Avenue, Sandown Place and Sunridge Close – became School Streets earlier this year as part of a trial scheme. But concerns were raised that Stoneycroft had not been included.

Now Stoke-on-Trent City Council is consulting on the latest traffic restrictions before deciding whether to make them permanent.

Alongside the Stoneycroft School Street, double yellow lines are being added on Goms Mill Road at its junction with Byatts Grove for a distance of 10 metres in a northerly direction and 15 metres in a southerly direction.

Residents hope it will tackle term-time parking issues in Stoneycroft. Those who live there can apply for a free exemption to enable them to use the street during the restricted hours.

Martin Plant said: "There used to be a lot of issues – some used to stop us from parking. When you are coming home it's the last thing you want.

"I used to come home from work and couldn't park anywhere near my own house."

Another resident said: "There was a lot of school traffic and for some people it might have been an issue. But it was during a 15-minute period and didn't really bother me to be honest."

Eddy Underwood, who lives in Field Avenue, said: "It's about time it was done. It's a good idea and I'm glad it's being sorted.

"People were parking in front of my gate and they wouldn't move until they got their kids in. We had to have bollards put in because of people parking – we even had them parking in my drive.

"But people come up and down like a bat out of hell – 12 years ago I requested the council put humps in but they said we weren't a priority. I think it's the only school in Stoke-on-Trent that doesn't have humps outside."

Ward councillor Dave Evans said: "Residents will have noticed the cameras have now gone up for the school street. As requested by residents Stoneycroft has also now been included within the scheme.

"I've arranged a walk around with the city council officers, PCSOs and the school. We will be looking at both the impact within the zone itself but also the roads on the periphery of the scheme, notably Gilman, Stoneyfield, Baddeley Green Lane, Trentfields and Church Avenue.

"If the scheme has a chance of being successful it cannot just move the problem on, we need a joined-up approach to disperse the school traffic across the village and minimise the impact."
