A North Staffordshire college has submitted a planning application to improve the artificial football pitch.

Currently Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group say the pitch can't be used due to the level of repair needed.

The pitch being off limits has forced students to travel to alternative venues until it can be repaired. The planning application submitted to Newcastle Borough Council details the improvement work to the existing artificial football pitch at Newcastle College, including replacement of fences and floodlights.

The replacement of the pitch does not require planning permission. However improvements to the spectators area at the west of the pitch involving reducing the height of the fence, replacing the floodlight to LED and changes to the boundary fencing are proposed.

The Planning, Design and Access Statement for the applicant states: "The proposal is for improvements to the area around existing artificial sports pitch at NSCG Newcastle College. The pitch cannot be used at present due to the level of repairs needed to the pitch and students are travelling to alternative facilities until the surface is replaced.

"The pitch replacement does not require planning permission and therefore this application relates only to the area around the pitch. The College are proposing a number of improvements, which includes the replacements of specified fences, and the replacement of light heads on the existing eight flood lights surrounding the pitch.

"The improvements will create a more enjoyable and accessible experience for users, which will prevent students from having to go elsewhere for alternative facilities.

"The proposal will bring the existing sports pitch back into use bringing significant social and health benefits to its users"
