A new public art project is set to be featured in Hanley as part of Stoke-on-Trent's Centenary celebrations.

The "100 Years, 100 Faces" mural will celebrate the people who have shaped the city over the past century and residents are invited to help choose those who will be featured in the artwork.

Following the voting window from 25 February - 28 March, the project is to be brought to life by local artists Rob Fenton and Alastair Barnett, responsible for a previously produced mural in 2023, celebrating Shelton Bar Steelworks.

The project is being coordinated and funded by the Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID and is due to be unveiled in the Autumn.

Jonathan Bellamy, Chairman for Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID said: "We are calling on the expertise of all communities in Stoke-on-Trent.

"Exploring the hidden histories of unsung heroes and those who have publicly dedicated their lives to our city is what this mural is all about.

"The BID is dedicated to celebrating 100 years of Stoke-on-Trent, particularly to honour stories that are woven into the fabric of our community".

A dedicated book is set to launch alongside the mural, featuring more information about each face and honourable mentions of other key players in Stoke's local history.

Communities and residents will also be able to vote for the individuals to be featured in the city centre mural, helping decide the faces that represent the past, present and future of Stoke-on-Trent.

The mural unveiling and celebratory weekend planned for this autumn will feature music, arts performances and more.

Cheryl Taylor, theatre director at Regent Theatre & Victoria Hall, will be collaborating with local groups and sectors of society to identify local heroes.

She said: "It's an honour to be working in collaboration with the BID team on this important project.

"Our shared ambition is to celebrate and honour some of the most influential Stokies, as well as uncover some lesser known people that have contributed to the city's successes over the past 100 years.

"We aim to share some remarkable stories and create a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations to achieve greatness, remain proud of our heritage and keep the heart of our city beating stronger than ever."

Members of the public can nominate who they believe to be deserving of a spot on the mural from 25 February by visiting the Stoke BID website

Details of selected entries will be announced and shared from the very first Stoke-on-Trent Day on 5 June 2025.
