More than 300 new council houses set to be delivered in Stoke-on-Trent

A total of 302 new council houses are due to be built in Stoke-on-Trent over the next five years, a council leader says.
Jane Ashworth, leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, revealed the figure in response to a formal question from a member of the public.
In her written response, Cllr Ashworth says that the new council properties will be delivered across five different developments.
The largest of these will be the redevelopment of the former Brookhouse Green Primary School site in Wellfield Road, Bentilee, which will see 117 new council houses built.
There will be 77 new council flats and houses built in Booth Street in Stoke, while 48 of the homes being built on the former Edensor High School site in Longton will be acquired by the city council.
And the redevelopment of the Doris Robinson Court and Lily Gertrude Simister Court sheltered-housing complexes in Meir and Tunstall will deliver 46 and 14 new council homes respectively.
Cllr Ashworth says the 302 figure does not include affordable homes set to be provided as part of other developments around the city, as it is not yet known whether they will be acquired by the council or another social housing provider.
The figure does not take into account the number of council houses which are set to be lost over the next five years through right-to-buy.
The city council currently has around 17,000 properties in its housing stock. Last year the number of the people on the authority's housing waiting list increased by 41 per cent to 3,138.
Thomas Sherratt, who posed the question to Cllr Ashworth, will have the chance to ask a follow-up question at the full council meeting on Thursday 26 March.
