Measures to help tackle anti-social behaviour and support community safety in Stoke-on-Trent's city centre have been extended for three years.

The Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which has been in place in Hanley since 2017, has been reviewed following consultation carried out by Stoke-on-Trent City Council's ASB Team.

It has now been extended until October 2029.

The city council said the amended order, which comes into effect on 2 October 2026, now includes Bucknall New Road and surrounding areas following reports of anti-social behaviour and crime in the area.

The existing two prohibitions covered by the PSPO remain unchanged. These prohibit drinking alcohol from an open vessel and behaviour that causes harassment, alarm or distress within the designated area.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council Leader, Jane Ashworth, said: "Everyone should be able to enjoy their local area without having to deal with anti-social behaviour, crime or behaviour that makes people feel unsafe.

"The extension of the Hanley PSPO means we can continue to use the powers available to us to tackle the issues that residents and communities are experiencing, while also extending the area covered to include Bucknall New Road and the surrounding area.

"This is just one part of the wider work we are doing with our partners to tackle anti-social behaviour and make our communities safer and more pleasant places to live, work and visit."

Stoke-on-Trent City Council said results from the consultation were 96 per cent in favour of the amendments three extension.

The PSPO provides the council and its partners with additional powers to tackle specified anti-social behaviour within the designated area.

Stoke North local policing team commander, Chief Inspector Rebecca Price, said: "We welcome the decision to extend the PSPO for a further three years. This will help us when dealing with people who persistently behave in an anti-social manner and have a detrimental effect on the community.

"Local officers are continuing to work closely with partners to make sure that Hanley remains a welcoming place for everyone to visit, live and work."

The council says it will continue to work with Staffordshire Police and other partners to respond to reports of anti-social behaviour and crime across the area.

The amended Hanley PSPO will remain in place for three years, until October 2029.
