A disqualified driver has been jailed after he doubled the speed limit with drugs in his car in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Japheth Wellington, 39, of Birmingham, was jailed for two-years-and-three-months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Thursday 10 September.

He previously admitted driving a motor vehicle dangerously, possession of a controlled drug of class A – cocaine, possession of a controlled drug of class B – cannabis, fraudulently using a registration mark / registration document, criminal damage to property valued under £5000. driving while disqualified, using a motor vehicle on a road / public place without third party insurance and failing to surrender to police / court bail at the appointed time.

It comes after officers spotted a Mini displaying suspected cloned plates on the M6 on 15 November last year.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "It failed to stop for officers and a short pursuit took place, where we stung the car.

"It was stopped on Stafford Avenue, Clayton, and Wellington was arrested.

"When he was searched, officers seized cannabis and cocaine was found shortly after."

Sergeant Richard Kimberley, of the road crime team (RCT) led the investigation.

He said: "Wellington showed no regard for other road users or pedestrians when he drove at 60mph in a 30mph area in an attempt to get away.

"It was crucial that we stopped his car as soon as possible and I am glad that Wellington has received a custodial sentence for his offending."
